Let \(f(z)=\sum^\infty_{n=1} a(n)e(nz)\) be a cusp form of weight \(k\geq 1\) and level \(D\) which is an eigenfunction of all Hecke characters. Moreover, let \(L_f(s)=\sum^\infty_{n=1}a(n)n^{-s+(k-1)/2}\) be the corresponding normalized \(L\)-function. It is expected that all non-trivial zeros of \(L(s)\) lie on the critical line \(\text{Re}(s)= 1/2\) (the generalized Riemann hypothesis). We known that the number of such zeros in the rectangle \(0\leq\text{Re}(s)\leq 1\), \(0<\text{Im}(s)\leq T\) is \[ \sim{1\over\pi} T\log T \] as \(T\to\infty\). The main result of the paper says that a positive proportion of non-trivial zeros lie on the critical line. This is an extension of the well-known and classical result by A. Selberg, who considered the case of the Riemann zeta function. Also the main idea of the proof in the paper is an extension of that of Selberg. The case of \(L\)-functions corresponding both to holomorphic and non-holomorphic cusp forms for the whole modular group was settled by \textit{J. L. Hafner} [Math. Ann. 264, 21--37 (1983; Zbl 0497.10018); J. Reine Angew. Math. 377, 127--158 (1987; Zbl 0603.10028)].
