This book discusses a wide range of problems varying from modelling to numerical analysis of controllers for flexible systems. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the design of control systems for flexible structures. A general framework for the derivation of the equations of motion of a flexible structure is presented in Chapter 2. This framework is illustrated by examples of a uniform string, cantilever beam, and damped elastic structures. Chapter 3 focuses on the identification problem and describes time-domain and frequency-domain approaches to both discrete- and continuous-time systems. Some applications to experimental modal analysis and systems with non-collocated measurements are discussed. Chapter 4 examines the modal control for systems with well separated modes. An important part of this theory deals with the spillover analysis in the linear framework. The control design procedure for a flexible beam with collocated actuator and sensor is considered as an example. The optimal control problem is studied in Chapter 5. Here, \(H^\infty\) and \(H^2\) controllers are constructed based the algebraic Riccati equation. The selection of the optimal scaling matrix is investigated as well. The implementation of active controllers for flexible structures is considered in Chapter 6. In particular, the effects of hysteresis are modeled for magnetostrictive actuators. Experimental results are presented in Chapter 7 for an important class of flexible structures. Namely, the results of analytical and numerical control design are applied to a flexible panel with piezoelectric patches. Some concluding remarks are given in the final Chapter 8.
