Let \(G\) be a finite group, and let \(\mathcal{D} \) be a set of self-normalizing subgroups of \(G\) closed under conjugation. The authors study the generalized Burnside ring \(\Omega (G, \mathcal{D})\), as defined by Yoshida. They show that there exists an epimorphism \(\varrho_\mathcal{D} : \Omega (G) \longrightarrow \Omega(G, \mathcal{D})\) such that \(\Omega (G) = \Omega (G, \mathcal{D}) \oplus \text{Ker} (\varrho_\mathcal{D})\); here \(\Omega (G)\) denotes the usual Burnside ring of \(G\). The degree of the generalized character of \(G\) defined by the identity element of \(\Omega (G, \mathcal{D})\) coincides with the Euler characteristic of the simplicial complex of chains in the poset \((\mathcal{D}, \subseteq)\). Recall that, for a prime number \(p\), a \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) of \(G\) is called radical if \(P = O_p (N_G(P))\). In this case \(N_G(P)\) is self-normalizing in \(G\). Motivated by the situation in finite groups of Lie type in characteristic \(p\), the authors specialize to the situation where \(\mathcal{D}\) is a set of normalizers of radical \(p\)-subgroups of \(G\) satisfying various hypotheses.
