This paper provides a new theorem on existence of bright soliton for the discrete and focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (\(\alpha>0\)): \[ i\frac{d}{dt}A_j+\alpha(A_{j+1}+A_{j-1})+\psi'(|A_j|^2)A_j=0,\quad j\in\mathbb{Z}. \] The result is analogous to Theorem 3.1 in [Nonlinearity 12, No. 3, 673--691 (1999; Zbl 0984.35147)] by \textit{M. I. Weinstein} but differs in two respects: the set of admissible \(\psi\) is widened to non-polynomial functions and the variational set is restricted to symmetric \((A_j)_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}\). For the proof, the author recasts the problem in the maximization of some energy under a power constraint. However the problem lacks in compactness and the remedy here consists in considering the subset of symmetric and \(N\)-periodic sequences for which the author proves the existence of a maximizer. Then, taking the limit \(N\rightarrow\infty\) together with some invariance and strict maximum condition leads to the existence of homoclinic waves.
