The main purpose of the paper under review is to present a comprehensive account of the relationship between elliptic topology and bifurcation theory. The author is mainly concerned with the link between the index bundle of a family of linear Fredholm operators and bifurcation from a trivial branch of solutions of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. The approach includes the Atiyah-Singer family index theorem and the Lyapunov-Schmidt method.
