This book was made to be used as the text of the introductory course entitled ``Introduction to Banach spaces'' which was taught at the 34th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (2023) at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.\N\NIt has 119 pages and its content is distributed in six chapters plus an appendix containing a brief biography of Stefan Banach. In the first chapter, basic definitions of Banach spaces are presented and the classic Banach spaces \(c_0\) and \(\ell_p\), \(1 \leq p \leq \infty\), are introduced. The second chapter deals with the open mapping theorem and the closed graph theorem. The third chapter presents Hilbert spaces with emphasis on the Riesz-Fréchet representation theorem and the Lax-Milgram theorem. In turn, the fourth chapter provides a more detailed study of the Lebesgue spaces \(L^p(\Omega)\) and \(L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\). The fifth chapter deals with the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function in Lebesgue spaces. Finally, in the sixth chapter one will find some exercises on the previous chapters.\N\NThis book is well written and is undoubtedly excellent material for those who want to start their studies in Banach spaces through a book written in Portuguese.
