The key observation in this paper is the fact that estimating the error for the unsteady Navier-Stokes system can be reduced to the estimation of the error for a steady Stokes system. Thus, the authors are concerned with a posteriori error estimates for both the semidiscrete and the full discrete cases. The spatial discretization is carried out using mixed finite elements, and for the time integration a backward Euler method or the two-step backward differentiation formula are used. Some numerical experiments are given.
