The authors consider the following two-dimensional problem: \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + b(x)\nabla u - \nabla(a(x)\nabla u) = f(x,t) (1),\;\;(x,t) \in \Omega \times (0, T], \] \[ u(x,0)=u_0(x), \;\;x \in \Omega \] where \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^2\) is a convex polygonal domain, \(x = (x_1,x_2)\), \(b(x)=(b_1(x), b_2(x))^T\) and \(a(x)\) satisfy the conditions \(0<a_*\leq a(x) \leq a^*\) and \(|b(x)|+|\nabla b(x)| \leq b^*\) respectively, where \(a_*, a^*, b^*\) are all positive constants. To solve the above problem the authors propose to combine the modified method of characteristics (MMOC) and the modified method of characteristics with adjusted advection (MMOCAA) with the finite volume element (FVE) method to construct two new schemes called MMOCFVE and MMOCAAFVE. These new schemes retain the advantages of both MMOG and FVE. It should be noted that the MMOCAAFVE scheme is a global mass conservation scheme. Optimal-order error estimates in the \(H^1\)-norm for the MMOCFVE and MMOCAAFVE schemes are derived under general conditions. In the final section a numerical example is considered in which the operator in the left part of (1) has constant coefficients and the problem has a known solution \(u(x,t)=exp(-t) x_1 x_2 (1-x_1) (1-x_2)\).
