Let \(X\) be a normed linear space and \(M\) a nonempty closed subset of \(X\). For \(x\in X\) put \(\rho(x,M)=\inf_{y\in M}\|y-x\|\) -- the distance from \(x\) to \(M\), and \(P_Mx=\{y\in M:\|y-x\|=\rho(x,M)\}\) -- the metric projection on \(M\). The closed balls and spheres are denoted by \(B(x,r),\, S(x,r)\), respectively, and let \(B=B(0,1),\, S=S(0,1).\) A point \(s\in S\) is called an \(M\)-acting point if \(s\in (P_Mx-x)/\rho(x,P_Mx)\) for some \(x\in X\). The space \(X\) is called \(M\)-uniformly convex if \(\|x_n-y_n\|\to 0\) for all \(M\)-active points \(x_n,y_n\in S\) satisfying \(\|x_n+y_n\|\to 2\).\N\NThe author shows that, in many problems of geometric approximation theory, it suffices to consider not the entire unit sphere, but only its \(M\)-acting points. For instance, if the metric projection \(P_M\) onto \(M\) has connected values (for example, \(M\) is a Chebyshev set), the space \(X\) is complete and \(M\)-uniformly convex, then the set M has connected intersections with closed balls.
