Let \(G\) be a finite group and let \(\mathrm{Irr}(G)\) be the set of irreducible complex characters of \(G\). The codegree of \(\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\) is defined as \(\mathrm{cod}(\chi)=|G: \ker \chi|/\chi(1)\).\N\NThe main result of the paper under review is Theorem 1.1: Let \(G\) be a finite group such that \(\chi^{2}(1) \leq \mathrm{cod}(\chi)\) for any \(\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\). Then \(G\) is solvable.\N\NAnother interesting result in this paper is Theorem 1.2: Let \(G\) be a finite non-solvable group with trivial Fitting subgroup. Assume that \(\mathrm{cod}(\chi) \leq \chi^{2}(1)\) for every \(\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\). Then the generalized Fitting subgroup \(F^{\ast}(G)\) is a direct product of subgroups which are isomorphic to \(\mathsf{O'N}\) and \(|G/F^{\ast}(G)| \leq 2\).
