The authors prove that a complete cylinder with isolated closed geodesics carries no, one, or infinitely many geometrically distinct and homologically visible closed geodesics. This answers a question posed by Abbondandolo. The authors extend the work by \textit{V. Bangert} [Math. Ann. 251, 83--96 (1980; Zbl 0422.53024)] who showed that on a complete cylinder of finite area there are infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics.
