The paper is a very nice contribution to the ongoing story connecting dynamics and equidistribution on homogeneous spaces to Diophantine approximation problems. In particular, the very general results on equidistribution of certain families periodic orbits of the diagonal subgroup on the space of unimodular lattices \(\mathrm{SL}(n, \mathbb R)/\mathrm{SL}(n, \mathbb Z)\) (natural generalizations of closed geodesics on the (unit tangent bundle of the) modular surface, which corresponds to the \(n=2\) case). The motivation for the paper results in one of the main theorems, Theorem 1.2, that is a beautiful result on equidistribution of certain periodic orbits associated to (totally real) number fields. This theorem has a very appealing Diophantine corollary (Theorem 1.5). The key (and deep) underlying technical tool developed is a generalization of the equidsitribution results of \textit{A. Eskin} et al. [Ann. Math. (2) 143, No. 2, 253--299 (1996; Zbl 0852.11054)] to the \(S\)-arithmetic setting.
