The author studies problems of convergence of general Fourier series with respect to ONS \( (\varphi_n) \) for the class \(C_V\) of functions with derivative of bounded variation on \( [0,1]. \) The function \[ T_n(x)=\max_{1\leq i\leq n}\left\vert \int_0^{i/n}Q_n(u,x)du\right\vert ,\] where \( Q_n(u,x)=\sum_{k=1}^ng_k(u)\varphi_k(x), \) \( g_n(x)=\int_0^x\varphi_n(u)du, \) plays here crucial role. \par For example, if \(T_n(x)=O(1)\) for \(x\in G\) (and partial sums of the function 1 are bounded), then the partial sums of the Fourier series are bounded for all functions of the class \(C_V\) on the set \(G,\) but if for some \(t\in G\) \(\limsup T_n(t)=\infty\), then there exists \(h\in C_V\) such that the partial sums for \(h\) are unbounded at \(t\) (here the set \(G, \vert G\vert =1,\) is defined by the system \((\varphi_n)\)). The properties of subsequences of \((\varphi_n)\) are studied, particular cases of classical trigonometric cosine and Haar systems are considered.
