The moment-angle complex was originally introduced by \textit{V. M. Buchstaber} and \textit{T. E. Panov}, [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 225, No. 2, 87--120 (1999; Zbl 0996.52012)] as a disc-circle decomposition of the Davis-Januszkiewicz universal space \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal K}\) associated to a simplicial complex \({\mathcal K}\). Face rings \({\mathbb{Z}}[{\mathcal S}]\) of simplicial posets \({\mathcal S}\) generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay rings. In the paper under review the authors use topological methods to study the face rings \({\mathbb{Z}}[{\mathcal S}]\). They extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets. The moment-angle complex of a simplicial poset \({\mathcal S}\) on \(m\) vertices is a certain \(T^m\)-space \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\), where \(T^m\) denotes the \(m\)-dimensional torus. The space \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\) is constructed by gluing products of discs and circles. The moment-angle complex \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\) has many important topological properties of \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal K}\). In particular, the authors prove that the integral cohomology algebra of \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\) is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring \({\mathbb{Z}}[S]\). This leads to a generalisation of Hochter's theorem, expressing the algebraic Betti numbers of \({\mathbb{Z}}[{\mathcal S}]\) in terms of the homology of full subposets in \({\mathcal S}\). Moreover, the authors estimate the total amount of homology of \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\) from below by proving the toral rank conjecture for the moment-angle complexes \({\mathcal Z}_{\mathcal S}\) .
