Let \(G\) be a finite group, \(\mathcal{L}(G)\) the lattice of all subgroups of \(G\) and \(\mathcal{L}_{sn}(G)\) the lattice of all subnormal subgroups of \(G\). Let \(\mathcal{T}\) be a sublattice of \(\mathcal{L}(G)\) such that \(1, G \in \mathcal{T}\). If \(A \leq G\), the \(\mathcal{T}\)-closure of \(A\) in \(G\) is the intersection of all subgroups in \(\mathcal{T}\) including \(A\), and the \(\mathcal{T}\)-core \(A_{\mathcal{S}}\) is the subgroup of \(A\) generated by all subgroups of \(A\) that belong to \(\mathcal{T}\). Let \(N \leq G\), the subgroup \(A\) is an \(N\)-\(\mathcal{T}\)-subgroup in \(G\) if either \(A \in \mathcal{T}\) or \(A_{\mathcal{T}} < A < A^{\mathcal{T}}\) and \(N\) avoids each composition factor \(H/K\) of \(G\) between \(A_{\mathcal{T}}\) and \(A^{\mathcal{T}}\). The subgroup \(A\) is Sylow permutable or \(S\)-permutable in \(G\) if \(A\) is permutable with every Sylow subgroup \(P\) of \(G\). It is remarkable that \(S\)-permutable subgroups in \(G\) constitute a sublattice \(\mathcal{S}\) in \(\mathcal{L}_{sn}(G)\) [\textit{O. H. Kegel}, Math. Z. 78, 205--221 (1962; Zbl 0102.26802)].\N\NThe main results in the paper under review are the following:\N\NTheorem A: A group \(G\) is soluble (supersoluble) if and only if the following hold: (i) \(G\) has a normal subgroup \(N\) with soluble (supersoluble) factor \(G/N\); (ii) every second maximal subgroup \(G\) is a \(N\)-\(\mathcal{S}\)-subgroup of \(G\).\N\NTheorem C: A group \(G\) is soluble (supersoluble) if and only if the following are fulfilled: (i) \(G\) has a normal subgroup \(N\) with soluble (supersoluble) factor \(G/N\); (ii) all maximal subgroups in every non-cyclic Sylow subgroup in \(G\) are \(N\)-\(\mathcal{S}\)-subgroups of \(G\).
