In this paper, the authors study the stability of solutions of a linear functional differential equation (FDE) of neutral type. Stability of solutions is defined as a continuous dependence of solutions on the intial functions. Sets of intial functions can be chosen in different ways and equipped with different norm. The authors aim to give definitions of stability so that the depedence on the choice of classes of initial function is reflected explicitly. To achieve this, solutions are formulated in the form of an integral operator that contains the fundamental solution \(X\) and the Cauchy function \(Y\) of the FDE under study. Then, the concept of so-called \(\mathbb X\)-stability -- a stability notion with respect to functions from a set \(\mathbb X\) -- is defined. Several types of \(\mathbb X\)-stability such that Lyapunov stability, asymptotic stability, and exponential stability are given. A new concept of strong asymptotic \(\mathbb X\)-stability is also introduced. These stability notions can be considered as properties of the functions \(X\) and \(Y\). Based on the solution formula, the problem of \(L_p\)-stability is investigated by studying the properties of only its Cauchy function. In particular, the relation between the asymptotic and exponential \(L_p\)-stability is characterized. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by a description of the asymptotic behavior of solution of a particular class of equations.
