In this interesting paper, the author presents novel injectivity results and inversion methods for generalized Abel operators. Generalized Abel equations have been employed in the recent literature to invert Radon transforms, which arise in a number of important imaging applications, such as Compton Scatter Tomography (CST), Ultrasound Reflection Tomography (URT), and X-ray CT. In this paper, a new Radon transform, of interest in URT, is studied. This Radon transform integrates a square integrable function of compact support over ellipsoid and hyperboloid surfaces with centers on a plane. Using this newly established theory on generalized Abel equations, the author first shows that this Radon transform is injective and, then, he provides an inversion method based on Neumann series. In addition, using algebraic methods, the image phantom reconstructions from the data is presented. It is also proved that the artifacts can be suppressed effectively using a total variation regularization.
