Based on the previous joint work with A. Joshi and M. Poddar [\textit{R. Harris} et al., Adv. Geom. 23, 401--411 (2023; Zbl 1520.14025)], the authors study abelian covers of rational surfaces which are branched along line arrangements. Using these abelian covers as building blocks, the authors construct new infinite families of closed simply connected nonspin irreducible symplectic \(4\)-manifolds with positive signature.
