Both authors have studied philosophy and mathematics, their main field is logic. The first author is chairholder of the CIPSH chair ``Diversity of Mathematical Research Cultures and Practices'' and head of the research group ``Mathematical Logic and interdisciplinary use of logic''; since 1923 he is member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg. Because the history of mathematics in Hamburg is much older than the university, the authors at first refer to the main institutions in Hamburg before 1919, so to the ``Mathematical Society'' founded in 1690 as the Kunst-Rechnungs-liebende Societät and to the contributions of mathematicians who were professors at the Academic High School (Gymnasium), founded in 1613. As the first professors of mathematics at the university there are mentioned Emil Artin, Wilhelm Blaschke and Erich Hecke (alphabetical order) from the ``Mathematical Seminar'', the actuary Paul Riebesell is referred to later. The next chapter is dedicated to a discussion about the term applied mathematics. In the main chapter ``Chronology of the institutions'' (pp. 33--46), including the situation of documentation by means of publications and archival documents, the ``golden years'', after the Third Reich and before the reform of the university (applied mathematics, stochastics), the era of the institutes, the faculty of mathematics. In the next main chapter ``Locations of mathematics in Hamburg'', the buildings are the main theme, four photos are presented and described and also some perspectives for a future location are discussed. In the last chapter, the external impact of the mathematics in Hamburg is treated, within the university, within mathematics and within the education landscape of Hamburg. The contribution is well documented (126 notes) and is based not only on publications and archival material, but also, and that is very remarkable, on many e-mails and phone calls with people involved in the development, so Horst Oberquelle, Peter Fischer-Appelt, Hans Joachim Oberle, Oswald Riemenschneider, Wolfgang Mackens. As a result a remarkable amount of new details could be presented.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1541.01004].
