The Nagami index of a space \(X\), \(\text{Nag}(X)\), is the smallest infinite cardinal \(\mathfrak m\) for which there is a space \(Y\) with weight \(<\mathfrak m\) and an upper semi-continuous map \(\varphi:Y\to 2^X\) with \(X=\bigcup\{\varphi(y) : y\in Y\}\). This index is used to obtain various cardinal inequalities. For example for \(X\) and \(Y\) spaces and \(f:X\to Y\) a continuous bijection, \(nw(X)\leq\max\{\text{Nag}(X),w(Y)\}\); for a space \(X\) and subspace \(H\subset C_p(X)\), \(nw(H)\leq\max\{\text{Nag}(X),d(H)\}\).
