The Flat Torus Theorem says that if a group \(G\) acts geometrically on a CAT(0) space \(X\) and contains a free Abelian group of rank \(n\), the \(X\) contains an \(n\)-flat and \(G\) acts co-compactly on that \(n\)-flat. Gromov asked whether the converse of this theorem holds, that is, whether the existence of an \(n\)-flat in \(X\) implies the existence of a free Abelian subgroup of rank \(n\) in \(G\). In the paper under review, the author obtains a partial converse to the Flat Torus Theorem, that is, she proves the converse up to some assumptions on the flat. She shows in addition that up to finite Hausdorff distances, the Abelian subgroup obtained acts co-compactly on the given flat, and she gives examples that show that this last conclusion does not hold without the assumptions on the flat.
