When using and computing two- (or higher-) dimensional polynomial splines on non-gridded and non-equally spaced data, the linear spaces of the splines are difficult to compute and in particular their dimension depends on the data point distribution in non-trivial ways. To illustrate this further, the authors consider so-called T-meshes and show how the dimension of the associated spline spaces do not depend stably on the topology of the data point distribution.
