Let \(M\) be a compact Riemannian manifold. The systole of \(M\), denoted by \(\mathrm{sys}(M)\), is the least length of a non-contractible loop on \(M\). The study of how systoles grow along congruence covers of a given base manifold \(M\) is a topic of particular interest. Assume \(M\) is a compact arithmetic hyperbolic surface arising from a quaternion division algebra over the rationals. In [Invent. Math. 117, No. 1, 27--56 (1994; Zbl 0814.14033)] \textit{P. Buser} and \textit{P. Sarnak} showed that there exists a constant \(c\) depending on \(M\) such that the principal congruence covers \(\{ M_I\}\) of \(M\) satisfy the inequality\N\[\N\mathrm{sys}(M_I)\geq \frac{4}{3}\log (g(M_I))-c, \N\]\Nwhere \(g(M_I)\) denotes the genus of \(M_I\) and log denotes the natural logarithm. This result was later extended to principal congruence covers of arbitrary compact arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces by \textit{M. G. Katz} et al. [J. Differ. Geom. 76, No. 3, 399--422 (2007; Zbl 1149.53025)]. In the same paper, they also proved an analogous result for compact arithmetic hyperbolic \(3\)-manifolds. In the paper under review, the authors study the systole growth of congruence towers of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces. They generalize the previous results and prove that the growth is at least logarithmic in the volume.
