The authors prove the following theorem on shift invariant spaces that are generated by one distribution, \[ V(f) := \left\{ \sum_{k =-\infty}^{\infty} a_{k} f(\cdot - k) \in {\mathcal D}: \, a_{k} \in \text{I\!R} \right\} \] and \[ V_{0}(f) := \left\{ \sum_{k =-\infty}^{\infty} a_{k} f(\cdot - k) \in {\mathcal D}: \, (a_{k}) \in \ell_{0}(\text{I\!R}) \right\}, \] where \(\ell_{0}(\text{I\!R})\) is the space of finitely supported sequences. Let \(M \geq 2\) be an integer, and let \(f\) and \(g\) be compactly supported \(M\)-refinable distributions. Then the following statements are equivalent: (1) The space \(V(f) \cap V(g)\) contains a non-polynomial. (2) \(V_{0}(f) \cap V_{0}(g)\) is nontrivial, i.e., it contains a nonzero element. (3) There exists a compactly supported \(M\)-refinable distribution \(\phi\) such that \(V_{0}(f) \cap V_{0}(g) = V_{0}(\phi)\). (4) There exists a compactly supported \(M\)-refinable distribution \(\phi\) such that \(V(f) \cap V(g) = V(\phi)\). (5) There exists a compactly supported \(M\)-refinable distribution \(\psi\) such that \(V_{0}(f) + V_{0}(g) = V_{0}(\psi)\). (6) There exists a compactly supported \(M\)-refinable distribution \(\psi\) such that \(V(f) + V(g) = V(\psi)\).
