For a real Banach space \(X\) the authors define two geometric constants \(\mu(X,a)\) and \(\mu'(X,a)\) in such a way that \(\mu(X,0)\) is Joly's rectangular constant and \(\mu'(X,0)\) is Joly's rectangular constant restricted to the unit sphere as first defined and studied by \textit{M. Baronti} [Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., V. Ser., B 18, 1065--1085 (1981; Zbl 0484.46018)].\par In Section~2 \(\mu(X,a)\) is studied. First upper and lower bounds are calculated, then some relations to \(\mu(X)\) follows. Theorem 2.5 (1) tells us that the upper bound can never be attained among uniformly non-square spaces while (2) states that finite-dimensional uniformly non-square spaces are the only where the upper bound is not attained. The section ends with a table of estimated values for \(\mu(X,a)\) in \(\ell_p, 2\leq p\leq 100\).\par In Section~3 \(\mu'(X,a)\) is studied. Again upper and lower bounds are calculated. The main result is probably that the upper bound is never attained among uniformly convex nor uniformly smooth spaces (Theorems~3.7 and 3.8). Also Section~3 ends with a table of estimated values in \(\ell_p, 2\leq p\leq 100\).
