The present paper surveys progress on problems connecting central limit theorems of probability theory to limit theorems for unitary representations of locally compact groups. This includes discussion of infinite divisibility and the corresponding Lévy--Khinchine formula, and the problem of finding an analogue of this formula for limits of products of uniformly infinitesimal arrays of positive definite functions on locally compact second countable groups.
