    C. Zenger has established the following result which has been used to treat numerical ranges and other topics in invariant subspaces. Let \(\left\| \cdot \right\| \) be a norm on \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\), let \(t_{k}>0\) for \(k=1,\dots,n\) with \(\sum_{k=1}^{n}t_{k}=1\). Then there exists \(w=(w_{1},\dots,w_{n})\in \mathbb{C}^{n}\) with \(\left\| w\right\| =1\) and \(w_{1}w_{2}\dots w_{n}\neq 0\) such that the functional \(f\) defined on \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\) by \(f(z)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}t_{k}z_{k}/w_{k}\) has norm 1. The author extends this result to \(l^{\infty }\) with respect to certain norms which are equivalent to the sup-norm \(\left\| \cdot \right\|_{\infty }\). He gives 2 examples pertaining to the assumptions in his generalization and indicates a possible application to the Arrow-Debreu model from mathematical economics.
