In the paper under review, the authors study the asymptotic behavior (in the sense of meromorphic functions) of the zeta function of a Laplace-type operator on a closed manifold when the underlying manifold is stretched in the direction normal to a dividing hypersurface, separating the manifold into two manifolds with infinite cylindrical ends. The authors also study the related problem on a manifold with boundary as the manifold is stretched in the direction normal to its boundary, forming a manifold with an infinite cylindrical end. Such singular deformations fall under the category of ``analytic surgery'', developed originally by \textit{A. Hassell}, \textit{R. Mazzeo} and \textit{R. Melrose} [Geom. Funct. Anal. 5, No.1, 14--75 (1995; Zbl 0838.57022), Commun. Anal. Geom. 3, No. 1, 115--222 (1995; Zbl 0854.58039), Commun. Anal. Geom. 6, No. 2, 255--289 (1998; Zbl 0926.58004)] in the context of eta invariants and determinants. The limit manifolds under analytic surgery are non-compact complete manifolds and there are complications due to the presence of a continuous spectrum, which is addressed using \(b\)-calculus developed by \textit{R. B. Melrose} [The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem. Research Notes in Mathematics (Boston, Mass.). 4. Wellesley, MA: A. K. Peters, Ltd.. (1993; Zbl 0796.58050)]. The analytic surgery formulas for \(\zeta\)-regularized determinants proved by \textit{Y. Lee} [Contemp. Math. 366, 95--108 (2005; Zbl 1084.58013)] and \textit{J. Müller} and \textit{W. Müller} [Duke Math. J. 133, No. 2, 259--312 (2006; Zbl 1111.58026)] are derived as corollaries of the results in the paper.
