Let \({\mathcal M}\) be the space of all probability measures on \(V=\{v\in\mathbb{Z}^d: |v|\leq 1\}\), where \(|\cdot|\) denotes the \(l^2\)-norm. Take \(\Omega={\mathcal M}^{\mathbb{Z}^d}.\) Let \({\mathcal F}\) be the Borel \(\sigma\)-field of \(\Omega\) and \(\text{P}\) a probability measure on \({\mathcal F}\). A random environment is an element \(\omega=\{\omega(x,v)\}_{x\in \mathbb{Z}^d, \, v\in V}\) of \(\Omega\) with distribution \( \text{P}\). The random environment is called balanced if \[ \text{P}\{\omega(x, e_i)=\omega(x, -e_i), \,\, \text{for all}\,\, i \,\, \text{and all} \;\;x\in\mathbb{Z}^d\}=1, \] and elliptic if \[ \text{P}\{\omega(x, e)>0 \;\;\text{for all} \;\;|e|=1 \;\;\text{and all} \;\;x\in\mathbb{Z}^d\}=1. \] In the paper, random walks in a balanced random environment in \(\mathbb{Z}^d\), \(d\geq 2\), are considered. An invariance principle (\(d\geq 2\)) and transience of the random walks if \(d\geq 3\) (recurrence if \(d=2\)) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition are proved. Using percolation arguments, it is shown that, under mere ellipticity, the results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.
