The authors obtain new uniqueness theorems for harmonic functions \(u\) on the unit disc or in the half plane satisfying certain growth conditions. Their results improve known ones due to V. L. Shapiro and F. Wolf. The relation between the size approach domain and the limit growth of \(|u|\) in boundary uniqueness theorems for harmonic functions \(u\) is investigated. The authors prove that the statements in their main theorem are sharp with respect to the polynomial scale of approach domains with examples that are related to a construction given by the authors and \textit{R. Chill} in [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 95, No. 3, 687--708 (2007; Zbl 1132.31004)]. The function-theoretical results for the half plane are applied to obtain a new resolvent description of spectral subspaces of \(C_0\)-groups \((T(t))_{t \in \mathbb{R}}\) on a Banach space \(X\) such that \(\|T(t)\| \leq M(1 + |t|^a)\), \(a \geq 0\). The obtained characterizations are interpreted as a study of the regularity of certain operator-valued distributions on the real line by means of their Poisson integrals.
