This is a textbook summarizing current research on game theoretic models for control of optical networks. Part I of the book (chapters 1-5) reviews essentials of game theory needed in the book. This includes classification of games and strategies, Nash equilibrium theory and its refinements, games with continuous action spaces and games with coupled constraints. Part II (chapters 6-10) begins with a tutorial on optical networks and goes on to discuss various control problems that have been modeled and analyzed using game theoretic concepts. These include power control by competing channels and network topology games. Theoretical and algorithmic issues are discussed in detail and supplemented with simulation and numerical experiments. Part III (chapters 11-12) considers special topics such as robustness and effect of delays and games for routing and path coloring. Chapter 13 is a summary. An appendix contains background mathematics. The book is a very clear exposition of a very active research area and brings the reader close to state-of-the art. It does a very good job of highlighting the role of game theoretic techniques, often presenting more than one approach or algorithm for a problem, and is at a level where it can be used to advantage by an interested researcher without prior exposure to familiarize herself with the broad area.
