The notion of amenability for Banach algebras was introduced by \textit{B. E. Johnson} [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 127, 96 p. (1972; Zbl 0256.18014)]. Recently, weaker versions of pseudo-amenability and pseudo-contractibility were introduced by \textit{F. Ghahramani} and \textit{R. J. Loy} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 142, No. 1, 111-123 (2007; Zbl 1118.46046)] and studied by \textit{Y. Choi, F. Ghahramani}, and \textit{Y. Zhang} [J. Funct. Anal. 256, No. 10, 3158-3191 (2009; Zbl 1179.46040)]. Finally, the authors of the current paper introduced a new notion for Banach algebras, called Johnson pseudo-contractibility [Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. - Simon Stevin 25, No. 2, 171-182 (2018; Zbl 1402.43002)]. In the article under review, the authors investigate Johnson pseudo-contractibility of semigroup algebras for uniformly locally finite inverse semigroups and show that for a Brandt semigroup \(S=M^0(G,I)\), the semigroup algebra \(\ell^1(S)\) is Johnson pseudo-contractible if and only if \(G\) is amenable and \(I\) is finite. Certain examples are provided to ensure that the new notion of Johnson pseudo-contractibility is different from those of pseudo-amenability and pseudo-contractibility for semigroup algebras. For Part II, see [\textit{M. Askari-Sayah} et al., ibid. 104, No. 1, 18--27 (2022; Zbl 1491.43001)].
