If \(S'\) is a (compact) group extension of a measure-preserving transformation \(T\), then necessary and sufficient conditions for the ergodicity of \(S'\) relative to \(T\) were provided by Keynes and Newton (1976). Conditions for weak mixing were derived by Parry and Pollicott (1986). The aim of the present somewhat expository paper is to extend these results to homogeneous extensions of \(T\). This is applied to the case where \(T\) is a Markov shift and the associated skewing function depends on a finite number of coordinates.
