Let \(G\) be a finite group, \(V\) a finite dimensional \(\mathbb{Q} G\)-module and \(\mathbb{K}=\text{End}_G(V)\). Let \(R\) be a maximal order in \(\mathbb{K}\) and \(\Lambda\) be an \(RG\)-lattice in \(V\). If \(\wp\) is a maximal two-sided ideal of \(R\), then consider the reduced representation \(V_\wp=\Lambda/\wp\Lambda\) of \(G\) over \(k_\wp=R/\wp\). In the above situation \(V\) is called a globally irreducible representation (GIR) if \(V\otimes_\mathbb{Q} \mathbb{R}\) is irreducible as \(\mathbb{R} G\)-module and for all maximal ideals \(\wp\) of \(R\) the representation \(V_\wp\) of \(G\) is irreducible over \(k_\wp\). The notion of global irreducibility of representations of finite groups was introduced by \textit{B. H. Gross} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 3, No. 4, 929-960 (1990; Zbl 0745.11035)] where an application of it in constructing some of the Elkies-Shioda lattices is given. In this paper the author first gives a necessary condition for a finite dimensional \(\mathbb{Q} G\)-module to be globally irreducible. Then all the GIRs of the groups \(L_2(q)\) and \(^2B_2(q)\) are classified. He also proves that the sporadic groups \(M_{11}\), \(M_{12}\), \(M_{22}\), \(J_2\), \(J_3\), \(HS\), \(Ru\), \(Suz\) and the Tits simple group \(^2F_4(2)'\) have GIRs although all of the 26 sporadic simple groups are not treated. The author also shows that the double extension \(\text{SP}_{2n}(p).2\), \(p\) a prime with \(p\equiv 1\pmod 4\), of the symplectic group \(\text{SP}_{2n}(p)\) has a unique GIR of dimension \(2(p^n-1)\). In the last section of the paper a table of currently known GIRs for finite groups is given.
