The purpose of this paper is to present some results about the lattice of Hausdorff topologies on a given group \(G\). The main results assume that \(G\) is maximally almost periodic such that the cardinality of the quotient of \(G\) by its commutator subgroup has the same cardinality as \(G\). The main theorems show that the maximal length of a chain of topologies which are totally bounded (resp. not totally bounded) is the maximum that one can expect from set-theoretical considerations. There are also similar results for chains of topologies with a prescribed local weight. Later results are concerned with the length of bounded chains of topologies for particular classes of groups.
