In Model 1, a particle starts from the origin at time zero and executes a Wiener process \(W(t)\in \mathbb{R}^d\). At time \(t=1\) it dies and is replaced by 0 or 2 offspring with equal probability. Each offspring then repeats the above steps from its starting point, \(W(1)\). All Wiener processes and offspring numbers are assumed independent of each other. In Model 2, at time zero there is a Poisson random field of particles in \(\mathbb{R}^d\), each of which behaves in accordance with Model 1. The paper deals with the properties of the process \(\{R_T,\;T\geq 0\}\), where \(R_T\) is the radius of the largest ball around the origin of \(\mathbb{R}^d\) which contains no particles at time \(T\). The models are defined formally by \textit{P. Révész} [``Random walks of infinitely many particles'' (1994; Zbl 0841.60053)]. Other aspects of Model 1 are treated by the author [Bernoulli 2, No. 1, 63-80 (1996; Zbl 0859.60077)].
