The authors study the problem \(-\Delta u=u(1- |u |^2)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^2\), where \(u\) is a complex valued function. Concerning the problem in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) the authors prove that \(|u|<1\) unless \(u=e^{i\alpha}\) for some \(\alpha\) in \(\mathbb{R}\) and that the modulus of the derivatives of order \(k\) of \(u\) can be estimated by constants \(M_k\) depending only on \(k\). For a solution \(u\) of the problem in an open set \(\Omega\) different from \(\mathbb{R}^2\) we have again that the modulus of the derivatives of order \(k\) of \(u\) can be estimated by bounds that depend only on the distance from \(\mathbb{R}^2-\Omega\). Therefore the set of the solutions for a given \(\Omega\) is compact in \(C(\Omega)\). Finally, for solutions \(u\) with \(|u|<1\), the authors prove for \(1-|u|\) an estimate similar to Harnack inequality for harmonic functions. Suppose now \(\Omega\) bounded and \(\limsup|u|\leq m\) at each boundary point with \(m\geq 1\). Then \(|u|\leq m\) in \(\Omega\). But if \(m<1\) then there is only a majorant with values in \((m,1)\) and sufficient conditions are given to have the convergence to 0 or the uniform boundedness of such a majorant as \(m\) goes to 0. In the last section of the paper the authors deal with the Dirichlet problem for the considered equation. They prove the existence of a solution continuous up to the boundary if \(\Omega\) is regular. Moreover if \(\Omega\) is ``small'' enough (see the paper for the exact meaning of ``small'') the map from boundary data to the corresponding solution is one-to-one-valued and continuous from \(C (\partial \Omega)\) to \(C(\overline \Omega)\).
