This is the ninth volume issued at IMA under the direction of Avner Friedman. As in the preceding volumes, in this one he collected many interesting problems arising in industry. Contents: Preface; (1) Sphere Packing Problems: from the Obvious to the Puzzling; (2) The Value of Performance Improvement at Constant Price/Performance; (3) A Diffusion Model of Droplet Absorption; (4) Information Theory and Sensor Management; (5) Problems and Applications in Density-Functional Theory; (6) Nonlinear Diffusion in Coating Flows; (7) A Mini-Max Pursuit Evasion Algorithm; (8) Formation of Photographic Images; (9) Convective-Diffusive Lattice-Gas Model for Flow; (10) Multi-Scale Problems in Modeling Semiconductor Processing Equipment; (11) Mathematical Modeling Needs in Optoelectronics; (12) Modeling Solvation Properties of Molecules; (13) Mathematical Problems in High-Precision Interferometric GPS; (14) Questions about the Poisson Equation in Semiconductor Problems; (15) Causal Modeling in Diagnosing Complex Industrial Equipment; (16) Mathematical Problems in Electrical Well Logging; (17) A Phenomenological Model for case-II Diffusion in Polymers; (18) Nonlinear Elastic-Viscoelastic Correspondence; (19) Solutions to Problems from Previous Parts; Index. We propose to the reader the following classification of the presentations: Geometry of Bodies, Manufacturing, (1) (this issue only one!); Economics, (2), Fluid Dynamics, Porous Media, Absorption, (3), (6), (9), (18); Robotics, Sensors and Algorithms, (4), (7), (15); Chemical Composition, (5); Microtechnology, (8); Modeling, (10), (11), (12), (14), (17); Well Logging, (16). As usual we remark the variety of problems and the large presence of fluid dynamics and modeling problems. A special feature of this volume is the inclusion of text discussing fundamental aspects of physics, such as rational design of chemicals and materials on the basis of molecular and atomic properties, (5); solvation properties of molecules, (12), improving the Poisson equation for modeling the behaviour of semiconductors, (14). As all the preceding volumes, this one provides again a nice source of inspiration for applied mathematicians.
