The authors consider classical pseudo-differential operators on the circle, given by formal series \[ A(x,D)= \sum^m_{j=-\infty}a_j(x)D^j, \] where \(a_j(x)\in C^\infty(S^1)\), and the algebra of the \(q\)-pseudo-differential operators, defined by \[ A(x,D_q)= \sum^m_{j=-\infty} a_j(x)D^j_q,\quad\text{where now}\quad D_qf(x)= {f(qx)- f(x)\over q-1}. \] One can see that \(\lim_{q\to 1} D_q=xD\). The sin-algebra and the Poisson algebra of symbols on the two-torus are also defined. The authors give a very detailed study of the corresponding properties, with particular attention to connections with Virasoro algebra, KP and KdV hierarchies and \(q\)-deformed Gelfand-Dickey structures.
