Let \(\pi\) be a cuspidal irreducible unitary representation of GL\((r,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})\) which satisfies Ramanujan's conjecture (tempered local components). Assume \(L_f(s,\pi\otimes\chi)\) (``\(f\)'' for ``finite'') satisfies the generalized Riemann hypothesis for all Dirichlet characters \(\chi\) modulo a fixed prime \(q\). Put \(r_\chi\) for the order of \(L_f(s,\pi\otimes\chi)\) at \(s=1/2\) and \(\varphi\) for Euler's function. The first result is that the sum of \(r_\chi\) over the \(\chi\) mod \(q\) is then bounded by \(\varphi(q)r/2\). Thus the average order of zero at \(1/2\) of \(L_f(s,\pi\otimes\chi)\) is bounded by \(r/2\). The second result applies to \(\pi\) as above but with trivial central character. Assuming GRH for \(L(s,\chi)\) -- all \(\chi\) mod \(A=3\cdot 4\cdot 5\cdot 7\cdot \text{cond}(\pi)\) -- an asymptotic formula for the sum of \(L_f(s,\pi\otimes \chi_D)\), over the square free \(D, D\equiv 1(A), 0\leq D\leq Y\), is obtained (for \(s\) with \(1-1/r<\text{Re} s<1\) if \(r\geq 2\)). The point being that here only the quadratic characters \(\chi_D\) contribute. Finally, a bound for \(L_f(1/2,\pi\otimes\chi_D)\), over a similar set for a similar \(\pi\), is obtained. The proofs develop the analytic number theoretical techniques of \textit{M. Ram Murty} and \textit{V. Kumar Murty} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 133, 447-475 (1991; Zbl 0745.11032)].
