Some results in segmented approximation (Q678443)

With this paper, the author gives a detailed survey on the main results in (univariate) segment approximation, most of them with complete proofs. In addition, he establishes new theorems on error estimates and on the asymptotic behavior of the segmential minimal deviation, provided that the approximating functions belong piecewise to a Pólya space, which generalizes known results on piecewise polynomial approximation. Some details: In section 2, existence and optimality of a leveled segmentation in a rather general setting are proved. A very sophisticated analysis of several instructive examples is given in section 3. The next sections are devoted the to the above-mentioned treatment of piecewise Pólya spaces and, as a special case, piecewise weighted polynomials. Finally, in section 6, some constructive methods are reviewed. An extensive list of 27 references concludes the paper.
