A subject of large interest for many scientists seems to be the problem of chaotic dynamics studied through the diagnosis of attractors' behaviour. The authors propose a diagnostic tool in the analysis of chaotic motions presented as a measurement of the probability of finding the system in a prescribed state \(x\) of the phase space. Their paper deals with the definition and the construction of the probability density and of the information entropy which are related to projections of Poincaré's maps describing chaotic attractors in a multidimensional phase space. The method consists of phase space's partitioning into cells and of computing the probability of finding points of the map in each cell. This probability measure also allows to compute the Shannon's information entropy related to the observed map of the attractor. As an application, the authors derive quantitative results of these probabilistic measures in order to improve the description of the properties of the chaotic and hyperchaotic steady-state dynamics in a system of two coupled and periodically driven nonlinear oscillators with small damping.
