The author proves that \[ Mf(x) = \sup_{k \in Z} \int_{R^n} |f(x - 2^k y)|d\mu(y) \] is bounded from \(H^1(R^n)\) into \(L^{1, \infty}(R^n)\), provided \(\mu\) is a finite positive Borel measure with support in \([-1,1]^n\) whose Fourier transform satisfies the decay condition \[ |\widehat \mu (\xi)|\leq C|\xi|^{-n/2}. \] The author shows that the method of proof used by \textit{M. Christ} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 128, No. 1, 19-42 (1988; Zbl 0666.47027)] to prove that \(M: H^1(R^n) \rightarrow L^{1,\infty}(R^n)\) when \(\mu\) is the Lebesgue measure \(\sigma_{n-1}\) on the unit sphere \(\Sigma_{n-1}\) in \(R^n\) can be modified to give his result. The proof of Christ used curvature of the support of \(\sigma_{n-1}\) to estimate the critical terms; the author's proof uses the estimate on the decay of \(\widehat \mu\), but compensates by requiring a faster rate of decay (the decay of \(\widehat \sigma_{n-1}\) is \( O( |\xi|^{(1-n)/2})\).
