The hydrodynamic integrability problem for systems \[ u_{t}^{i} = \sum_{j = 1}^{n} A_{j}^{i}(\vec u)u_{x}^{j},\quad i = 1,...,n\tag{1} \] with generic velocity matrix \(A_{j}^{i}(\vec u) \), the eigenvalues of which are pairwise distinct, is considered. It is proved that each hydrodynamically integrable system with generic velocity matrix is necessarily diagonalizable. The following theorem is stated: system \((1)\) with a generic velocity matrix is hydrodynamically integrable if and only if it is diagonalizable and semi-Hamiltonian. An invariant integrability criterion for equations of hydrodynamic type is obtained.
