This paper proves that the width of a satellite knot is no less than \(n^2\) times the width of a companion with winding number \(n\). It also shows that equality holds for satellite knots with braid pattern. Viewing width as a refinement of bridge number and using recent techniques of \textit{A. Zupan} [Topol. Proc. 40, 179--188 (2012; Zbl 1280.57012)] to calculate it, the authors note the importance of thin position to classical work of Gabai and Gordon and Luecke in the 1980s.
