Let \(A\) be a \textit{quasi-finite} algebra over a commutative ring \(R\) with \(1\), i.e., \(A\) is the limit of a direct system of module finite algebras over \(R\). Let \(\mathrm{GL}_n(A,I)\) denote the principal congruence subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(A)\) of level \(I\) and \(E_n(A,J)\) denote the relative elementary subgroup of level \(J\), where \(I,J\) are two-sided \(A\)-ideals. (\(E_n(A)=E_n(A,A)\) is the usual elementary subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(A)\).) Using a localization-patching method originally due to Bak the authors prove the following commutator formula \N\[\N[\mathrm{GL}_n(A,I),E_n(A,J)]=[E_n(A,I),E_n(A,J)].\N\]\N This answers a question of Stepanov and Vavilov and extends many known results.
