The main theorem obtained in this paper, after a series of lemmas, is stated as follows.\N\NSuppose that \(G\) is a second-countable, locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid and \(c: G \rightarrow \mathbb Z\) is an unperforated, continuous, integer-valued cocycle, that is, a homomorphism for composable elements, with values decomposable by composable elements. Let \(G_0\) be the kernel of \(c\) and \(G_1\) be the subset of all the elements of \(G\) mapped to \(1\) by \(c\). Let \(X(G)\) be the Hilbert \(C^*_r(G_0)\)-module completion of the subspace \(C_c(G_1)\) of continuous functions on \(G_1\) with compact support in the reduced groupoid \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_r(G)\), which is a \(C^*\)-correspondence over the reduced subgroupoid \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_r(G_0)\) with module actions and inner product. The inclusion from \(C_c(G_0)\) to \(C_c(G)\) extends to an embedding from \(C^*_r(G_0)\) to \(C^*_r(G)\), and the inclusion from \(C_c(G_1)\) to \(C_c(G)\) extends to a linear map from \(X(G)\) to \(C^*_r(G)\). The pair of these inclusions or their extensions is a Cuntz-Pimsner covariant representation of \(X(G)\), and its integrated form is an isomorphism from the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to \(X(G)\) onto \(C^*_r(G)\).\N\NAs a corollary, the amenability of the subgroupoid \(G_0\) implies that of \(G\).\N\NAs another corollary, a six-term exact sequence of \(K\)-theory groups for the reduced subgroupoid \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_r(G_0)\) involving the Katsura ideal associated to \(X(G)\) is deduced; cf. [\textit{T. Katsura}, J. Funct. Anal. 217, No. 2, 366--401 (2004; Zbl 1067.46054)].
