The paper studies the existence problem for pseudo-quadratic Tits quadrangles over arbitrary unitary associative rings. It introduces strong stability for standard pseudo-quadratic modules as an extension of stable range \(1\) and proves in Theorem 8.1 that a standard pseudo-quadratic module \(\Lambda\) admits a unitary pseudo-quadratic Tits quadrangle of type \(\Lambda\) if and only if \(\Lambda\) is strongly stable.\N\NThe later part of the paper develops the stronger notion of secure stability and uses it to obtain a geometric description of the associated quadrangle in terms of hyperbolic cyclic submodules and special submodules. It also gives a sufficient condition for the existence of a natural projective embedding and indicates connections with results in unitary \(K\)-theory; compare, for example, [\textit{A. Bak}, Lect. Notes Math. 108, 55--66 (1969; Zbl 0192.37202); \textit{B. A. Magurn} et al., Invent. Math. 91, No. 3, 525--542 (1988; Zbl 0639.16015); \textit{A. J. Hahn} and \textit{O. T. O'Meara}, The classical groups and K-theory. Berlin: Springer (1989; Zbl 0683.20033)]. It also proves further results on transitivity on hyperbolic pairs, subgroups generated by Eichler transformations, cancellation and the preservation of strong stability under the iterated extensions considered in the paper.
