The authors study blow-up criteria of Serrin's type for the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system of compressible nematic liquid crystal flows. Assuming that the domain is a bounded ball, and adopting the method for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations [the second author, Kyoto J. Math. 55, No. 1, 1--15 (2015; Zbl 1433.35278); Osaka J. Math. 52, No. 1, 271--283 (2015; Zbl 1317.35175)], the authors first give a new Serrin's continuation principle for strong solutions. Then, further assuming that initial data are spherically symmetric, the authors can use some new observations to establish a localized Serrin's regularity criterion, which asserts that the concentration or vanishing of the density, the unbounded Serrin norm inflammation of the gradient liquid crystal field around the center should be responsible for the formation of singularities. This paper extends the blow-up criteria for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the Ericksen-Leslie system of compressible nematic liquid crystal flows.
