In [in: Mappings and functors. Work Collect., Moskva 1984, 31--40 (1984; Zbl 0565.54015)] the author has introduced Fedorchuk compact spaces as compact Hausdorff spaces that are (homeomorphic to) the limit of a Fedorchuk system, i.e., of an inverse system of the form \(\{X_{\alpha}, \pi_{\beta}^{\alpha}, \gamma\}\), where \(\gamma\) is an ordinal number, \(\alpha, \beta \in \gamma\), \(X_{0}\) is a point, every bonding map \(\pi_{\alpha}^{\alpha + 1}\) is fully closed, and, for every \(x \in X_{\alpha}\), \((\pi_{\alpha}^{\alpha + 1})^{-1}\{x\}\) is metrizable. For a survey on fully closed mappings see [\textit{V. V. Fedorchuk}, Fundam. Prikl. Mat. 9, No. 4, 105--235 (2003; Zbl 1073.54010); translation in J. Math. Sci., New York 136, No. 5, 4201--4292 (2006)]. Given a Fedorchuk compact space \(X\), the smallest ordinal \(\gamma\) for which there exists a Fedorchuk system \(\{X_{\alpha}, \pi_{\beta}^{\alpha}, \gamma\}\) with \(X\) as its limit is called the spectral height of \(X\). It is known that closed subspaces of Fedorchuk compact spaces are Fedorchuk compact. The main result of the paper shows that the behaviour concerning products is not that nice: A product of Fedorchuk compact spaces of spectral height 3 is never a Fedorchuk compact space with countable spectral height.
